You can use message announcements feature on your iPhone or iPad if your device is running on iOS 13 or iPadOS. What does the message announcement feature do? When you activate this feature on your iOS device, you’ll get a voice announcement by the Siri for the messages you received while you’re wearing the AirPods or Powerbeats Pro. Currently, the feature is limited to work on Messages app, but according to Apple, you’ll also be able to use it with third party messaging apps by the next update.

How to activate message announcement features on iPhone and iPad
To enable the feature for the first time, you will have to wear your AirPods. Follow these steps to turn on message announcements feature.
1. Turn on your AirPods, and wear them.
2. Connect your iPhone or iPad to your AirPods.
3. Now, when you see a pop up on your screen.
4. Tap on ‘Announce Message with Siri.’
This turns on the message announcement feature. Now when you receive a message, you’ll get an audio notification in your AirPods. Siri will tell you about the sender and also read you the message. If you want to reply to the message, then you can directly say, “Tell them! (And your message)” Siri will send your message.
How to disable message announcements feature on iPhone and iPad
If you don’t want Siri to tell you about the messages you received and it won’t read your messages, then you can turn off this feature anytime when you want from the Settings. Here is how.
1. Open the ‘Settings.’
2. Go to ‘Notification’ settings.
3. Tap on ‘Announce Message with Siri.’
4. On the next screen, you’ll see a green toggle switch at the top right corner.
5. Tap on the green toggle switch and turn it to grey.
When it becomes grey, it means the feature has been turned off. Now, Siri will not tell you about the coming messages in your AirPods.
How to manage message announcements for apps
You can select for whom you’ll get message announcements by Siri. Here is how.
1. Open the ‘Settings.’
2. Go to ‘Notification’ settings.
3. Tap on ‘Announce Message with Siri.’
4. Tap on ‘Messages’ under ANNOUNCE MESSAGE.
5. Tap on the switch at the top to turn on message announcements for specific apps.
6. Then select for whom (Favorites, Everyone, Recent, or All Contacts) you want to get the message announcements.
7. Save the changes and close ‘Settings.’
Now, Siri will only announce the messages that you’ve selected. So, enjoy this new Apple’s feature on your iOS device. Hopefully, soon it will also work with third-party messaging apps.
